The Emirate has some oases, the most important being Al Dhaid. It also has islands of Abu Mousa and Sir Bunair. Between the city of Sharjah and the east coast, there are areas of Maliha, Fileh and Madam. It also has sandy plains on the coast, extending from the west coast to the mountains. The east coastal plain extends up to the Hajar mountains, a fertile area.
The history of population in the emirate dates back to 6000 years when the place was called by the name of "Sarqua" and the people were generally engaged in maritime trade, in addition to agriculture, fishing and pearl diving. Most of the habitation was around the valleys
