Sharjah Capital of Culture

Under the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qassimi Member of the UAE Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah , the emirate has attained the title of cultural capital as well as Capital of Arab culture for 1998 from "UNESCO", and attained the title of the Capital of Islamic Culture for 2014 in recognition of its remarkable contributions in preserving, boosting and disseminating culture at local, Arab and Islamic levels, and also recognition of authentic cultural projects of the emirate and the deep concern for culture by His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah over the years. It is worth noting that the emirate has instituted a number of cultural awards, including the Sharjah Award for Arab Creativity, Sharjah Award for Literature, Sharjah Award for Research, Sharjah Award for Arab Culture - UNESCO Awards, Sharjah International Book Fair and Theatre Awards along with awards for publishing in different fields of knowledge and creativity. The emirate is also known for supporting efforts to build human potential, with His Highness paying great attention to promoting the intellectual growth of people, rather than just building concrete structures.
